Any other time, or place, or person, and the intensity of the gaze might grate on her nerves, if not worse. But Jyn finds that she doesn't mind it in this case, because she's just as intent on learning Cassian, too, from head to foot and back again, all the little details that she hasn't yet had time to discover.

And, at least on her part, reassuring herself that this isn't some ... fever dream, that it's real, and true, that she isn't somehow just making it all up as a way to ... cope.

She doesn't feel alone now, and that makes all the difference. "You're warm", she mumbles, and there are tears tinging her voice all over again, gentle as she finds a way to burrow all the closer still. "This alright?"

"It's perfect." He presses his lips to her forehead, trying to ease whatever's plaguing her mind because he can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice. Combing back her hair with his fingers, he looks down at her again. How can someone so small be so incredibly tough and resilient?

He can slowly feel the walls - the prison - he's built around him crumble because of her. All he wants is to let her in - to be able to share their pain and to have her want him nonetheless.

She hadn't had any other choices, well, save for giving up entirely, and that was out of the question. She's had plenty of time to harden, and to build the same types of walls to protect herself that he had. And the knowledge that they were falling down quickly was ... paralyzing.

"The medics are going to be angry with me for doing this", she says, hiccuping a soft laugh. Not that she cares much, honestly. There's nowhere else she'd rather be. And nothing is going to take her away unless absolutely necessary.

Jyn has no idea where to go from here, how to be vulnerable and open, but for Cassian, she'll try.

"Let them be angry," he says with a grin - and then he kisses her lips just because.

Cassian has never known such freedom like this - freedom to laugh and smile and be himself with another person. He has always been Cassian, Alliance Intelligence Officer, first for so long, he almost doesn't know how to be someone else.

They've certainly faced down worse. And when she breathes out a chuckle into the kiss, it's clear that she's genuinely amused - and pleasantly surprised to be graced by a grin.

It's so strange to be able to act in such a way, to honestly share the sort of happiness she wouldn't have dared allow herself time to dream about before, and all the better that she gets to share it with him. Things were never going to be perfect, and might not even come close, but what they have - what they could build - she's sure will be good.

And that's more than she ever thought was possible.
