[ Jesse sits on the end of the motel bed, shoulders hunched and elbows resting on his knees, turning the ring with little diamonds over and over in his fingers. He stares down at it, watching the dull hotel lamp by the bed glint against the shiny gold. The hotel bed is a mess of strewn, tangled sheets, with empty, oily pizza boxes and day-old Chinese takeout cluttered around the room. Old needles, burnt spoons, speedball-soaked cotton balls, empty cans of soda, an overflowing ashtray litter the bedside tables. Beside the bed, Jesse's black duffel bag, stashed with hundreds of thousands of dollars, lies zipped open.

They escaped from Albuquerque. Jesse has escaped Mr. White. Jane has escaped her overbearing, controlling asshole dad. They had thrown the bag of money, a heap of clothes, and the remainder of their drug stash in Jesse's red piece of trash of a car and sped off into the night. No note was left, no sign of where they had gone, nothing. They had driven all night and all day until they crossed the New Mexico border into Arizona. Starving, craving a hit despite promising each other not to use again, Jesse had swung into the first motel along the deserted highway: a cheap, rundown place, in a cheap, deserted, rundown town.

They have been here four days now. The room reeks of cigarettes and the bittersweet, burnt vinegary scent of heroin. Just gonna relax here for a few days, Jesse keeps reassuring himself. Just a few days to unwind, then they will get clean and hit the road again to go… Well, they'd agreed on New Zealand but the impulse to run off into the night was made easier by simply driving, driving, driving.

In the bathroom, the shower shuts off. Jesse doesn't really register it, though; he's lost in gazing at the ring, imagining the kind of life he and Jane can have now they have escaped. Maybe a cottage somewhere near the beach, surrounded by birds and wildlife and sunshine. Maybe kids, one day. Three kids. Three beautiful kids that he would dote on every day. And Jane… God, just the mere thought of her is enough to make his heart ache in a way that makes him feel more alive than he's ever felt in his whole life.

The bathroom door suddenly opening snaps Jesse out of his reverie. He looks quickly over at the door, a little startled, and just as quickly palms the ring out of sight. His pale, drug-weary face lights up with a soft smile, making the dark bags under his eyes seem a little less heavy and sunken. ]

About time. Thought you'd fallen asleep in there.

[ Jane thinks that they'll be able to get clean, actually, she believes it. They're going to get clean and live somewhere beautiful. The thoughts and dreams are running through her head, images that her fingers itch to sketch down but she doesn't, not right now anyway. The shower wasn't that great, the water pressure's shit here so it's a wonder she stayed in as long as she did.

She's wrapped in a towel, mostly dried off as she comes back into the room a smile spreading across her lips as she looks at Jesse. She didn't think it was possible to be this happy before she met him. All they needed to do is get clean. ]

In that shit shower?

Grace had said a lot in the past that one day she'd head out to the States, but didn't have any concrete plans as to when she was going to make it happen. But then the New Year had rolled in, and she'd figured 'what better time to go?'. Connor hadn't been her sole reason for going, but seeing him was going to be a definite plus. And the weather. The better weather was always going to be a factor.

Where there was sunshine, there was the urge to go to the beach - and dragging Connor along with her hadn't been all that difficult.

No, no it really hadn't - he knows how long she's been wanting to make this trip, he's not gonna be a buzzkill. In fact, he pretty much jumped into the role of eager tour guide. So when she wants to go to the beach, he's got just the place in mind.

Metropolis isn't really known for beaches, but there is one - Queensland Beach.. Maybe not be spectacular surf, but if you want a boardwalk experience, it's the best place to hit up short of Coney Island. Rides, corndogs, and a nice long stretch of sandy beach.
