[ it's not the first time she's been taken dancing, but it is the first time she has been taken dancing somewhere that isn't a club. the out of the way new orleanian joint that gambit picks out requiring some adjustment on her part, but laura soon adapts, even if outwardly she remains stiff-bodied and analytical as she scans her surroundings, memorising the steps of the other dancers, finding the pattern, applying her knowledge of other types of choreography to her current situation quickly proving a surefire method for what's expected. ]

[ after that, it's simply a case of breaking out of her comfort zone and replicating the movements. but it's … hard. ]

[ this isn't her scene, and she knows it. thinks that maybe the other patrons do, too. or, it could just be that she's overly conscious of herself. social situations still something of a struggle, laura never quite knowing how to navigate them, given her limited or negative experiences. ]

[ being with gambit helps, of course. he proves to be a good partner and an excellent teacher. takes some of her social anxiety away with his southern charm and easy smiles, behaving both encouragingly and supportively as they flit between their table and the makeshift, severely overcrowded dancefloor. it's … nice, laura thinks, warm of face and as close as she ever gets to actually smiling as she and gambit dance, talk, and drink. the invitation to join gambit tonight one that laura is glad she didn't pass up on, even if places such as these aren't really her thing, the headache of the assault on her heightened senses all but forgotten as she allows gambit to lead her out onto the floor once more, her clothes sticking to her body, dark strands of hair spilling down in front of her face. ]

Have you been here before?

[ laura asks, the question late to be asked, though she doubts it matters. any conversation is good conversation, right? progress in her constant attempt to be more normal, able to function like a real person. something she's beginning to feel more and more like as she discovers herself, especially when in the company of good people. like gambit: the man who means more to her each day, her feelings towards him ever-changing. ]

[Remy knew this kind of scene was not really her scene, but he was hoping she might like it some. She was one of the few people he could not real well, which, since he cared a whole hell of a lot how she felt, and thought, made things even harder.]

[Being here with her, dancing, showing her steps and being a touch stone for her, with slow words, always there for her to concentrate on, he hopes it helps, and when the dance turns to something easier, and they are on the floor, and she asks him that question, he smiles.]
Sure, chere'. A few times. Enough to pick up the moves and know how to find a good seat.

[His eyes tracked her, red on black, glowing in the half-light. This girl turned woman who drew him, originally as a student, then as something like a little sister, and slowly but surely, as something far more, far deeper. Something hard to explain in words.]

You're a fast learner.

It is not difficult.

[ unlike some of the other skills she has learnt over the years, like how to take a man apart piece by piece to extract information from him or how to hide in plain sight to best position yourself for an assassination on a target of high-value. neither of those, or any of the other examples that come to mind, are appropriate things for her to say, though, despite gambit knowing enough about where she comes from and the things she's done. and so laura stays quiet, head bowed as she imitates concentration for appearance's sake. ]

[ she's knows what she's doing now. picked up the pattern to the dance and the various freestyle movements long before now, but it's preferential to stay like this: letting gambit lead and being the one to follow. besides, although she understands the movements and can feel the music in her body, there's still her unshakable discomfort to contend with, given the amount of people in such a small, enclosed space. how she sticks out from the crowd in her all black attire that's either oversized or a size too small. but gambit hasn't touched on it. and if he's noticed, he certainly hasn't pointed it out. his only concern seeming to be that she has a good time. ]

[ and if that's the case: mission accomplished. ]

You are a good teacher.

[ added a heartbeat later, her footwork changing to the beat, petite frame drawing in close. ]

Not for all, but you do learn well. [He likes her skill, her will power, and her abilities. All of them. As they danced closer, he slid his hands to her hips, the beat pulling them slow, and throbbing to it's intensity. He stared at her, eyes darkened a little.]

I find you... I find you very attractive, Laura, and not just physically. [His voice was small and quiet, almost not believing he was telling her this. He had told himself he never would. He swallowed as they danced, finding her intriguing and fun, and complex, and all of those things together, and he liked that, too.]
